The influence of Wisconsinan glaciation and contemporary stream hydrology on microsatellite DNA variation in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

چکیده
Microsatellite DNA variation was examined in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) populations from throughout British Columbia, Canada, to address the roles of historical isolation, postglacial dispersal, and contemporary geomorphology in structuring genetic variation and differentiation. We detected signatures of historical isolation and postglacial recolonization in the form of ‘‘interior’’ and ‘‘coastal’’ population groupings, a decline in genetic variation as distance increased from putative glacial refugia, and different extents of isolation-by-distance in different regions. Rainbow trout populations were structured genetically into major regions and into smaller watersheds and then into drainages. Within drainages, high levels of dispersal and gene flow were inferred between geographically proximate and contiguous lakes. Elevation, stream branching points (nodes), fluvial distance, migration barriers, and stream and lake order influenced genetic diversity within, and differentiation among, populations. Habitat characteristics, particularly lake surface area and perimeter, were poor predictors of genetic variation. Although founder events and postglacial dispersal influenced broadscale patterns of genetic diversity in rainbow trout, our results suggest that contemporary factors can strongly modulate historical

Microsatellite diversity and conservation of a relic trout population: McCloud River redband trout.
Rainbow trout native to the McCloud River, California, USA (Oncorhynchus mykiss stonei) are thought to represent a relic, nonanadromous trout adapted to harsh, fragmented environments. These fish, commonly named McCloud River 'redband' trout, survive in their most primitive form in a small, spring-fed stream, Sheepheaven Creek, in the upper McCloud River drainage. Turn-of-the-century fisheries ...

Laboratory and in-stream enclosure experiments were used to determine whether rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss influence survival of longnose dace Rhinichthys cataractae. In the laboratory, adult rainbow trout preyed on longnose dace in 42% of trials and juvenile rainbow trout did not prey on longnose dace during the first 6 h after rainbow trout introduction. Survival of longnose dace did not...
متن کاملConservation prioritization in widespread species: the use of genetic and morphological data to assess population distinctiveness in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from British Columbia, Canada
Prioritization of efforts to maintain biodiversity is an important component of conservation, but is more often applied to ecosystems or species than within species. We assessed distinctiveness among 27 populations of rainbow trout (Salmonidae: Oncorhynchus mykiss) from British Columbia, Canada, using microsatellite DNA variation (representing historical or contemporary demography) and morpholo...
متن کاملEvaluation of family growth response to fishmeal and gluten-based diets in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
A study was conducted to evaluate genotype×feed interactions in a commercial strain of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Microsatellite DNA markers were used to determine the pedigree of the top 1% and bottom 1% of progeny in a large scale commercial growth trial of 24,000 rainbow trout from 20 full-sib families (20 dams×10 sires in a nested mating design). The progeny were pooled at eyed st...
متن کاملComparative Genome Mapping Between Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Rainbow Trout (O. mykiss) Based on Homologous Microsatellite Loci
Comparative genome mapping can rapidly facilitate the transfer of DNA sequence information from a well-characterized species to one that is less described. Chromosome arm numbers are conserved between members of the teleost family Salmonidae, order Salmoniformes, permitting rapid alignment of large syntenic blocks of DNA between members of the group. However, extensive Robertsonian rearrangemen...
